Walk back the way you came, stand by the highway, and flag down any white van that looks like a colectivo. Don’t worry if one passes you. It might be a private charter, and another is bound to pass soon. Tell them to take you to the Tulum ruins—las ruinas de Tulum .

The colectivo may turn on the road to the ruins or let you off on the side of the highway. The way to the ruins is clearly marked. It’s about a 10-minute walk from the highway to the entrance. People will wave at you and try to sell you tickets, but there's no need to buy anything from the tourist stands on the way. You can buy your ticket for the ruins right before you enter. When the road through the jungle ends, take a left for the entrance to the ruins. The road to the right leads to the beach.

Tulum is open every day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last visitors admitted at 4:30. The entrance is 70 pesos. You can check for updates on the page for Tulum on the website for the Mexican Secretary of Culture. It’s in Spanish but times and prices should be obvious.

If you didn’t bring a lunch, then you can eat at one of the little restaurants on the way to the ruins. The prices may be a little higher (between 50-200 pesos) than a similar restaurant in Tulum town or Playa del Carmen, but the food is authentic with lots of seafood options.

12:20 pm -- The Mayan Ruins of Tulum, Tulum Beach, and Tulum Town

Price: MXN $70.00 (for a single adult)
